June 4 2000 Scott Baker, Scott Everett and Doug Dorr head to the southernmost point in the
Everglades National Park, Flamingo. Our first trip to this place was planned months in
advance. We picked up a chart and decided that graveyard creek would be an incredible
place for our inaugural adventure. Originally we planned to have 2 boats in our group. The
other captained by Steve Broad. Unfortunately, weight and space restrictions wouldn't allow
us to do it. Looking back, I'm not sure why. So the three of us loaded up the gear and
headed down the canal to coot bay. If I remember correctly we were in for a 25 mile or so run
through Coot Bay, Whitewater Bay and Ponce de Leon Bay before we would arrive at the
campsite. As you can see above, the campsite at Graveyard is awesome. The most ideal
place in the world if you are a fisherman. The first couple of hours we spent setting up camp,
(Doug spent it wading around the shoreline) and then we headed out to a grass flat for a few
trout tight lines. The evening we spent casting around camp for a few snook. Doug caught 2
nice linesiders literally 75 feet from our tents.

As soon as the sun went down, the bugs came out. The mosquitos were surprisingly
nonexistent, but these creepy crawly bastards that fell out of the trees as the breeze came
through drove us insane. They fell down into the back of your shirt or land on your head no
matter where you went. The next morning we decided to fish the dawn patrol and pack it up.
We missed a few nice fish that morning, but the early am heat and swarms of noseums
made our decision to fly home that much easier. Yes, we were wusses. Looking back
though, it was a memorable vacation I would love to do again.
