Sunday-Monday August 25,26 2002 Flamingo
Weather: Mostly sunny both days, light winds, no rain
Mosquito Level: Bothersome
Two days in Flamingo provided many opportunities for redfish, snook, tarpon, shark and
trout. Sunday we began out front and began to spot redfish and rolling tarpon right away.
Baker hooked up with a redfish of 22" in the morning and then the fish got a little spooky.
Steve had his topwater plug crushed several times by redfish but didn't hook up. Everett
cast to at least 5 reds which inspected his lure and denied him. Twice the fish sucked it
in almost as fast as it blew the lure back out. We headed back to the marina around
noon and checked in to the lodge. The lodge is the only way to fish two quality days out
of Flamingo considering the drive we have from Palm Beach.
We ate some lunch and had a couple hour nap in our air conditioned fishing suite.
Around 4:30 we were drifting live pinfish over a 4 foot deep flat looking for tarpon. Early
in the morning large pods of cruising fish scoured the flat for food. But in the evening,
they were nowhere to be found. Instead, our baitrunners screamed as black tip sharks
began taking the pinfish for a rod testing run across the flat. After a 180 yard run and a
ten minute fight, Baker landed the 5 foot shark.
Unfortunately no tarpon showed up for us this particular evening. So back to the lodge for
some jerk chicken and a rum and coke.
Monday morning we headed straight out to pole the flats on snake bight. The morning
started slow with a few trout and snapper catches. Shortly after the tide switched the
reds began cruising the flat. We spotted wakes and a few spot tailers popping up
everywhere. Baker soon hooked up with a hard fighting 26" red.
And fortunately shortly after E released his fish, Steve set up hard on a redfish with a
pearl fluke. Another good fight and a fish in the boat.
Then the fishing just turned off. Mullet everywhere, a few redfish tails on the last of the
falling tide but no more hookups. And it was time for us to head for Boca. Could have
caught a few more fish, but it was a great time again in Flamingo. See you next week.
